Otis Class Demo "Underwater Creature"

These 3 images of creature concept is done by Cecil, Izzy and Jung Park during their Sat IP class at Otis College of Art and Design. Cecil started off with his pen sketch scan and Izzy defined the forms in design and add more volumetric shading and finally Jung compose a underwater scene with a couple of photo references. Each artist spent about 20-30 mins, it was a lot of fun and most definitely the students get to witness how each artists work differently and how they solve design problems with different techniques.. Cheers,
Cecil

2nd Challenge- A Banner for all
Come up with a cool banner design that can go with this blog title bar. The theme is "cyberspace" with some accent of greek/Roman motifs and designs. Flying gears or exploding metal circuits, anything extra fun and crazy will be appropriate. The following graphics also need to be in the banner: Concept Art @ Sony Santa Monica and a short sentence of headline.

Izzy's Mr. Freeze- Challenge the First
I saw Heart of Ice when I was a kid. One of the finest episodes of Batman the Animated Series ever. I fell in love with Mr. Freeze from that point on. I've seen him universally portrayed as a tall super thin guy, but I figured, someone who's body has basically taken on characteristics of ice would have an insanely slow metabolism. So I figure he maybe feeds once every month, but maintains a chunky shape, to some degree. I rarely ever draw or paint fan art, but I think I'll definitely consider this of the same ilk. Here he is with his iron lung like suit, that sustains his unbelievably cold standard body temperature. He'd sweat to death as if in a desert even in the frozen north of the Arctic. His two bears are named Frigidaire, and Icetrey.
Lots of raw internet photos were used to expedite the process. So it is essentially a paint-over of a collage.

Challenge, The First
Izzy's
Cecil's
Cecil's Comment: Character is my weak side- not so much confident with anatomy and figures but also I haven't done much in my career. My passion is always there. Seriously.. I am just too busy with buildlings and columns. HW- I took a little different approach with this one, intstead of thinking if I am designing a character-which usually ends up a dummy standing pose that will show flaws in anatomy or proportions and etc. Since this one was based on comic character- I took a liberty on more elaborate composition as I am doing a study of someone else's cover art. I can't say who's influence is here but I definitely can say I am a big fan of messy, paintery comic covers- Phil Hale and what's other guys?,,, anyhow this is a lot of fun, I think the top one is straight study of existing Batman, then I flipped the image to convert it to some imperial war official with samurai sword. "Nanking Massacre"
I watched on computer the other day and the section when they talked about how Japanese soldiers were cutting civilians and prisoners heads off -that made me so sick and I was furious and tried not to think about it and it came right through on this image. What a War can do to people? Napoleon said "War is a business of Barbarians" that's so true. More blood only excuses more evil blood.

Design your own Batman or Batman Villain in anticipation of the coming movie! Traditional initial sketches (pencil or ink), followed by a full color illustration in any medium of your Batman/ Villain, in a setting of your choice.
Sketches Due Wed. Finals Due Monday.
